I’m assuming that these are all the apps paying for placement.

Sometimes it will display more content (like images) that are stripped in another app. For example, paywalled news sources are often partially blocked in one app, but fully available in another. The topics are particularly sketchy since they are often curated and not always maintained. You can follow sources and both custom and tailored topics. This eliminates the need for other tools like InoReader or Feedly. The app just provides access to the server.

This is entirely custom, because I run my own RSS server. You can follow sources and custom search topics. You can follow sources and tailored (but not custom) search topics. I say approaches, because a lot of news apps will support more than one approach. The former allows me to get highly tailored information and creates a filter bubble. The other is focused on publications or sources, which often reach far beyond what I am normally seeking. One is focused on topics that I want to track: RSS feeds, Google search alerts, news topics. My approach to online news is to use two approaches. I contacted support but I realized it may be time for me to look for another app to fill Flipboard’s niche in my news gathering tools. You could only see the first page I guess it should be called “Board” now. News sources that paginated content so it could be flipped, right to left, broke. A news app I rely on – Flipboard (aka Briefing) – started to flake out.
